MYRTLE BEACH- The Greenbrier East Lady Spartans fell to 1-1 on their spring break getaway after suffering a 14-7 loss to the East Gaston (NC) Lady Warriors on Tuesday, April 7.
Greenbrier East fell behind 4-0 in the top of the first but they didn’t panic whatsoever and stuck with their gameplan.
Reagan Cline walked to lead off the bottom half and immediately scored on Maddie Baker’s triple. Baker would end up being stranded at third and at the end of one, East trailed 4-1.
Following a 1-2-3 inning from pitcher Kennah Collins, the Spartans answered with another run in the second when Lacy Patriacca scored on a East Gaston error on a ball that was hit by Sydney Norman.
Ater two full innings, the Lady Spartans had trimmed the deficit to 4-2.
Trailing 5-2 in the bottom half of the third frame, the Cline and Baker combo struck again. The former led off with a single and the latter knocked her second 3-bagger of the day that scored Cline and put the score at 5-3.
In the fourth inning, the Spartans (5-4) really got their bats working. Campbell Bundy singled to lead things off and Bailee Cleghon came on to courtesy run. After two straight outs and Cleghon still standing on first, Natalee Sibold singled her over to second. Then, Norah Ambler, one of the standouts from game one on Monday, doubled to left field and that scored Cleghon and Greenbrier East now trailed by just one run, 5-4. Sibold followed with a score on a wild pitch and Cline then doubled home Ambler for a 6-5 Spartan lead after four.
But East Gaston buckled down after that and got seven hits over the next two frames, including a grand slam from Kelsi Norris and the Lady Spartans had their fate sealed in that last portion of the contest.
Cline (3-4, 2 runs, 2 RBI) and Baker (2-3, 2 RBI) continued to hit the ball well and led the East offensive attack. Cleghon scored a team-leading two runs.
Collins, Maddie Wellman, and Chloey Wykle shared time in the circle. Wykle recorded four strikeouts in 1.2 innings.
The Lady Spartans will play their third and final game in the Palmetto State on Wednesday when they battle a team from New York, the Corning-Painted Post Lady Hawks.
