LAS VEGAS, NV (WVDN)- The West Virginia Mountaineers finally wrapped up their 2025-26 season and although it’s not a NCAA national title trophy they are taking back home, it is absolutely the next best thing.
The Mounties won the second annual crown tournament, held in Las Vegas, and features eight teams who were close to making the Big Dance but fell just short. All the teams were from power five conferences only.
WVU beat Stanford 82-77 (OT) in their first game, Creighton 87-70 in the final four, and then got by Oklahoma 89-82 in overtime to end the season on a high note.
Honor Huff scored 38 points in his final game as a Mountaineer and went 8-of-15 from 3-point land and 12-12 at the free throw line. Huff has one of the best personalities and attitudes in college basketball and with his title performance, firmly submitted his name into the Mountaineer Legend handbook.
He got a lot of help against the Sooners from senior Chance Moore who also finished his Mountaineer career. He had 19 points and 10 rebounds and was key on every part of the floor. Brenen Lorient (15 points, 8 reb, 3 steals, 3 blocks) was the only other player in double figures.
West Virginia celebrated the victory at halfcourt with the Fox TV crew and the tournament coordinators. Huff was named the MVP and coach Ross Hodge held the trophy high in the air and felt a little redemption for missing out on the NCAA tournament in his first season in Morgantown.
The players also got to take home 300,000 dollars for the victory, which is a nice chunk of change to go out and win three basketball games.
WVU finishes the 2026 season at 21-14 and looks forward to the team’s future with coach Hodge and staff at the helm.
