RUPERT- Things didn’t look great halfway through the contest, but as the game progressed, the Greenbrier West Lady Cavaliers decided to make a statement.
On Friday, April 3, the Lady Cavaliers relinquished a 7-5 lead in the fourth inning and fell behind 10-7 to the Sherman Tide, but after some late inning heroics, they escaped with an 11-10 walk-off win.
A milestone was set in the first inning when Cavs pitcher Brilee Redden got career strikeout number 500 just two batters into the game. That number is the most in school history and will just continue to grow throughout this 2026 campaign. But right after the historic strikeout, Sherman’s next batter, Savannah Drake belted a two-run homerun to give the Tide an early 2-0 lead.
Greenbrier West (2-3) cut that lead to 2-1 when Diana Porter came around to score on a Drake error to give West a little momentum.
In the bottom of the second, with the Lady Cavs down 3-1, Brooklyn Adkins knocked an RBI single that scored Elliana Deitz and the deficit was trimmed to 3-2. Finally, two more Cavalier runners scored on another Sherman miscue in the field and Greenbrier West had jumped out to a 4-3 lead after two.
Sherman got the lead right back at 5-4 in the top of the third, but once again, West would have their own answer. Redden knocked in Laikyn Tolley, who had singled in her at bat to get on, with an RBI base hit and Adkins followed with a huge 2-run triple.
After three full frames, West led 7-5.
After scoring a couple runs via West errors, Sherman got another deep ball, this one from Ellie Jeffrey, and just like that, the Tide had taken a 9-7 advantage. The lead was at 10-7 before the inning eventually ended.
Fast forward to the bottom of the seventh inning, the Cavaliers first two hitters got out. So, with two outs and only one left to work with, Porter singled. Then, Redden kept hope alive with an RBI double that knotted the score at 10-all. That’s when Adkins came to the plate and laced a 1-2 pitch to right field and Redden came across with the final run of the night to seal a big time West victory.
Adkins was stellar at the plate and finished 4-4 with 5 RBI. Redden was 2-3 with two runs scored a two RBI. Porter got three hits, scored four runs and drove in another. And last but not least, Deitz went 2-4 with two runs scored.
Redden got the victory in the circle and finished with nine strikeouts.
Summers County is up next for the Cavs on Monday evening at home.
