MASON COUNTY, W.Va. (WVDN) – Governor Patrick Morrisey today joined Frontieras North America for the groundbreaking of its advanced coal reformation facility in Mason County, a privately funded project expected to create more than 2,000 construction jobs and over 200 full-time positions once operational.
“This is exactly the kind of investment West Virginia is competing for and winning,” said Governor Morrisey. “Frontieras is bringing hundreds of millions of dollars in private capital into our state, creating thousands of jobs, and opening new markets for West Virginia coal.”
The facility will deploy Frontieras’ advanced technology to convert coal into ultra-low sulfur fuels, fertilizers, and industrial carbon products, creating new long-term demand for Appalachian coal while expanding its commercial uses beyond traditional power generation and steelmaking.
Frontieras selected West Virginia over competing locations in Texas and Wyoming, citing the state’s workforce, logistics advantages, and pro-growth business climate. The Mason County site offers access to the Ohio River, rail infrastructure, and proximity to regional coal supplies, positioning it as a strategic hub for production and distribution.
Since October, West Virginia has secured more than $12.8 billion in private investment and almost 11,000 projected jobs. When including public sector investments such as Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) funding and the Rural Health Transformation initiative, those totals increase to $14.3 billion in investments and 12,000 projected jobs.
“This project is about building the future of energy right here in West Virginia,” said Governor Morrisey. “We are creating new opportunities for our coal industry, growing our economy, and proving West Virginia can compete and win.”
The investment aligns with Governor Morrisey’s “50 by 50” energy plan to expand West Virginia’s power production to 50 gigawatts by 2050. By leveraging coal, natural gas, nuclear, and other technologies, the plan positions West Virginia to lead the nation in energy production while driving long-term economic growth and competitiveness.
