FAIRLEA- After getting overwhelmed 13-1 in game one of a double header on Saturday against Musselman, the Greenbrier East Spartans baseball team recovered nicely in game number two and got an important 10-4 victory, their first win of the 2026 season.
Coach Cory Mann was finally able to get senior Layne Lambert on the mound after he had been dealing with a hamstring issue over the last couple weeks.
Lambert was outstanding and pitched a complete game, allowed just four hits, two earned runs, and struck out 10. He threw 97 pitches in the contest.
The Spartans took a 5-1 lead after two innings and took advantage of two Applemen errors that led to a run. Then, Lambert stepped up to the plate and tripled on a liner to center but ended up left stranded there.
A base clearing triple from Nelson Lynch highlighted the second inning. Lynch hit with the bases loaded and ripped a 2-2 pitch to center and the Spartans took a 4-1 lead. Lynch would then score on an RBI single from Sam Roshau. After putting up a couple runs in the fourth, Musselman would do no more damage on the day as Lambert and the defense behind him were more than solid the rest of the way and Lambert even struck out the side in the seventh just for good measure.
The Spartans finished with 12 hits in game two. Musselman committed six errors.
Lynch led the way at the plate for Greenbrier East. He was 2-5 with a triple, 4 runs scored, and 3 RBI. DP Seams was 2-3 with 2 RBI. Roshau (2-4, run, RBI) and Brandon Teaney (2-3, 2 runs) also stood out.
East moves to 1-3 on the season.
The Spartans are scheduled to play at Princeton this Monday, March 30.
