LEWISBURG W.Va. (WVDN) – Carnegie Hall, in partnership with Lee Street Studios, is pleased to offer Woodturning 101, a five‑week introductory course taught by rotating members of the West Virginia Woodturners Association (WVWA). Meeting on Saturdays, April 11 and 18, and May 2, 9, and 16 from 9 a.m. to noon, this hands‑on series is designed for adults ages 18 and older who are eager to explore the fundamentals of woodturning in a small‑group studio environment. With a maximum class size of just four students, participants will receive individualized instruction and ample time at the lathe.
This immersive Appalachian Heritage class begins with a thorough introduction to safety practices, equipment, and tool usage—including sharpening techniques essential for successful turning. Students will then move into wood selection and preparation before learning the foundational skills of turning, sanding, and finishing. Over the course of the series, each participant will experience every step required to create a finished wooden bowl, gaining both technical knowledge and confidence in the process. The long‑term goal of the program is to equip students with the skills needed to continue woodturning independently at the WVWA studio.
The cost for the course is $200 plus a $35 WVWA membership fee for Carnegie Hall members, and $250 plus the membership fee for nonmembers. The one‑time $35 membership fee is required for participation and should be paid directly to the WV Woodturners Association at the first class session.
Carnegie Hall invites community members to join this unique opportunity to learn traditional woodworking skills, connect with experienced artisans, and create a handcrafted piece from start to finish within a supportive studio setting.
