BUCKHANNON — After a year of social distancing and limited interactions, West Virginia’s Largest Yard Sale is finally returning to Upshur and Lewis counties. Whether you are looking to clean out your closets and make some extra cash or find the deal of a lifetime, you won’t want to miss these sales on August 6-7.
For well over 20 years, yard sale enthusiasts and collectors have been traveling near and far to see what area sellers have to offer. The Upshur and Lewis County Convention and Visitor’s Bureaus partnered to bring back the sale of all sales this year. Currently, there are close to 80 registered participants; however, more than 100 are expected.
People reportedly come from as far as Florida every year to search for local bargains, equipped with everything they need for a successful haul. Here are a few helpful tips to make the weekend worth your while. Always wear comfortable walking shoes. One of the great things about WV’s Largest Yard Sale is that you get to see beautiful neighborhoods. Many times, you’ll find a long stretch of yard sales along one street, but you do have to walk between them, so plan to dress comfortably.
Make sure to drink water, water and more water. The weather is always spectacular and sunny during WV’s Largest Yard Sale, so stay hydrated. Sunscreen, sunglasses and hats are a good idea as well. If you have a reusable shopping bag, pack it in the car. Most of the individual yard sales will have bags available for you after you’ve purchased a few items; however, it’s a good idea to bring some reusable bags just in case.
It sounds obvious, but remember to bring pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters and plenty of small bills to purchase your bargains! Many participants will not be able to break large bills at the start of their sales. “Enjoy the process,” suggests Laura Meadows, executive director of Upshur County Convention and Visitors Bureau.
There is still time to register your own yard sale at https://visitbuckhannon.org/yardsale/. The last day to register is July 30. Watch for the official printed map of West Virginia’s Largest Yard Sale in the August 5 edition of The Record Delta.
