Charleston, W.Va. (WVDN) – Jefferson High School (Jefferson County) won the fourth regional competition of the West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE)’s 2026 Academic Showdown. Spring Mills High School (Berkeley County) placed second in the event held at Shepherd University today. Both teams will compete in the Showdown finale in Charleston on May 1.

The competition showcases students’ knowledge of numerous topics, including mathematics, science, social studies, literature, pop culture and more.

The WVDE hosted teams from the following schools:

  • Berkeley Springs High School
  • Frankfort High School
  • Hampshire High School
  • Jefferson High School
  • Petersburg High School
  • Spring Mills High School
  • Washington High School

The next regional competition is scheduled for Saturday, March 7, at Concord University.
 
The Showdown is a partnership between the WVDE, the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, the West Virginia Culture Center and West Virginia Public Broadcasting.
