West Virginia (WVDN) — As tax season approaches, West Virginians are encouraged to take advantage of free income tax preparation services available statewide through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, supported by the West Virginia Alliance for Sustainable Families (WVASF).
All VITA services in West Virginia are community-focused programs funded by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the West Virginia Department of Human Services (DoHS) via the Bureau for Family Assistance (BFA). These partnerships ensure eligible residents can receive high-quality, no-cost tax assistance in trusted community settings. Every volunteer is IRS certified.
January 29 marks Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Awareness Day, a national effort to raise awareness about one of the most important tax credits for working individuals and families.
Millions of eligible taxpayers miss out on the EITC each year, often because they are unaware they qualify or do not file a tax return. VITA sites help ensure eligible filers claim the credits they’ve earned.
The VITA program provides free tax preparation for individuals and families with a 2025 income limit of $69,000, helping taxpayers avoid the high costs charged by commercial tax preparation retailers, which often total hundreds of dollars or more.
“Many West Virginians don’t realize they qualify for free tax help and end up paying unnecessary fees,” said WVASF representatives. “VITA exists to make sure families can file accurately and keep more of their hard-earned money.”
Tax filing has become more complicated due to new tax law changes, including discussions around no tax on tips, no tax on overtime pay, and no tax on car loan interest for vehicles manufactured in the United States. Navigating these changes can be difficult without guidance. WVASF, as a nonprofit organization, helps residents understand these issues and connects them to free tax preparation support.
Residents can locate a VITA site near them by visiting WVASF.org, which provides up-to-date information on available locations statewide.
For those who prefer to file independently, MyFreeTaxes.com offers free, secure online tax filing through a platform operated by the nonprofit United Way.
