CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WVDN) — Today, Governor Patrick Morrisey announced a $19 million state investment to upgrade Clarksburg’s aging water infrastructure. The funding announced during a press conference in Clarksburg will support a $50 million project aimed at replacing lead service lines, modernizing outdated systems, and ensuring safe, reliable water for residents and businesses.

Made possible through a partnership between local, state, and federal entities, the project will replace hazardous lead service lines, upgrade undersized water mains, enhance fire protection capabilities, install modern water meters, and repair leaks throughout the system.

“Every West Virginian should be able to turn on the tap and know that the water coming out is safe,” said Governor Morrisey. “For too long, aging infrastructure has threatened the health and safety of our communities. This investment is about restoring trust in our public systems.”

The initiative addresses longstanding infrastructure challenges and health risks tied to lead pipes, which remain in many older systems and can pose serious danger, especially to children, pregnant women, and older adults.

The Governor also recognized the Clarksburg Water Board for its leadership and ongoing work to improve the local water system.

“We are deeply grateful to Governor Morrisey and his commitment to the health and safety of our community,” said Jason Myers, General Manager of the Clarksburg Water Board. “This $19 million grant is a game changer for Clarksburg. It allows us to accelerate the removal of lead service lines and ensures that our residents have access to safe, reliable drinking water for generations to come.”

The state’s investment reflects a broader commitment to infrastructure modernization across West Virginia, with a focus on protecting public health, strengthening local economies, and improving quality of life across West Virginia.

Local officials, regional development councils, and federal partners were also recognized for their role in securing the funding and coordinating the project.
