The Greenbrier East Lady Spartans watched their season slip away on Wednesday night, June 16 when they lost the final game of the Regional finals to St. Albans 8-2 at Lady Spartan Field.
A large crowd covered most of the space but unfortunately, it was not enough to push the Spartans over the top.
After a scoreless first inning, the Red Dragons scored on a double by Jaden Conrad and a 2-run home run by Taylor Glancy in the second frame. St. Albans led 3-0 after two.
The Spartans trailed 5-0 heading into the fourth but put a little rally together. Lindsey Black hit a long double that scored Annabelle Honaker. But with two on base and just one out, the next two hitters could not muster any offense and the inning ended quickly.
East’s only other run came in the bottom of the sixth when Honaker scored again on a Josie Patterson double.
St. Albans (30-1) scored three runs in the fifth inning.
Tayven Stephenson was credited with the pitching victory. The sophomore surrendered two runs on six hits over seven innings, striking out eight.
Josi Ervin took the loss for East Spartans. The lefthander allowed 11 hits and eight runs over seven innings. She struck out seven and the future is very bright for the sophomore.
Honaker led East at the plate with two hits in three at-bats.
The Red Dragons collected 11 hits.
After the game was over, several of the East girls remained on the field saddened their incredible season had come to an end. Pictures were taken with seniors Taylor Graham and Honaker as those two stepped foot on the field for the final time. After the final tears flowed, the field and parking lot cleared and the off-season officially started for East.
They finished the season with a final record of 19-8.
Special thanks to Jen Ervin for providing stats and information all year.
