Big Horned Owl
Some weeks ago John Moore got to losing chickens so he set a trap in the hope that he would catch the thief. One morning he found the trap gone. The dog was called to trail up the mink or polecat that had carried off the trap, but no track could he pick up. Several days went by and Mr. Moore happened to go by the place where the trap had been set. A big-horned owl flew up with the trap on his leg. He lit in a nearby tree and was shot. It was one of the largest of its kind, with a wing measurement that was just a few inches short of five feet.
Voted Down
West Virginia Wesleyan College at Buckhannon and Morris Harvey College of Barboursville will not be merged and relocated as one institution at Charleston. Such a proposition was almost unanimously voted down at the Clarksburg meeting of the West Virginia Conference, Methodist Episcopal Church.
A Sedentary Turtle
Oliver Ballard of Greenville, Monroe County, recently found a terrapin with these letters and figures carried on its shell: Wm. Ballard 1844; Harrison Ballard 1868; Oliver Ballard 1905. The same terrapin was found by him near the same spot twenty years ago

Street Cave-In Continues
Lewisburg is having further trouble with what appears to be an extension of the cave-in of a block in West Court Street, where hundreds of tons of rock have been used to build up a sinking section of street and alley. A third cave-in occurred last week.
New Lewisburg Buildings
Contracts have been let and work has been started on two new business buildings in Lewisburg. One for the Leggett Department Store chain, has been under consideration for months. It will house a department store link in the chain and the location is opposite the former Princess Theatre. The Goff
Building, with construction begun, will be opposite the Lewisburg Furniture Co., which will use the ground store room and three office rooms above.
Polio Death In Kanawha
Kanawha County recorded its fourth polio fatality last Wednesday, the first death of an adult from the disease this year in the county.

Control Demanded For Use Of Handguns
Five big city police chiefs have urged Congress to take strong measures to control handguns, including their manufacture and sale. But the Senate’s leading advocate of gun control legislation, Sen. Jacob Javits (R-NY), said their proposals were politically unrealistic and they would have to accept compromises.
Jay Will Run For Office
John D. Rockefeller IV, saying West Virginians “hunger for absolute personal honesty and integrity in the governor’s office” has thrown his hat in the ring and will run for Governor in 1976. Rockefeller, 38, most recently was president of West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon. The Democratic
nominee for Governor in 1972, he also served as Secretary of State and as a member of the West Virginia Legislature.
Word On Grain Sales Expected
President Ford has promised an announcement about his embargo on grain sales to the Soviet Union. Ford said the grain deal “will be a very good agreement” if the fine points can be worked out. He also said negotiations were progressing on a related deal that is hoped to bring Russian oil to the United States at “favorable prices” in exchange for U. S. grain.

Justice Brings Wealth Of Experience To Coaching Job
James C. “Jim” Justice II was recently hired as the new girls’ basketball coach at Greenbrier East High School. Justice has won Biddy-Buddy championships, Christian Youth championships, junior high county championships, high school AAU and YBOA state championships, semipro title games and three national championships. He is currently employed by the Greenbrier County Board of Education as a substitute teacher and has worked several days already this school year.
GCCC Awaits Ginko Leaf Drop
One of the best kept secrets in the Greenbrier Valley is about to occur on the campus of Greenbrier Community College Center of Bluefield State College. The campus is home to what is being explored as possibly the record Ginko tree in West Virginia and perhaps in the eastern mountians, and this unique Oriental tree is about to give its annual autumn show of color with bright golden yellow leaves which, suddenly and quickly, fall as to give
a ”halo” effect on the lawn surrounding the tree.
WVU Band To Give Performance
The Greenbrier Valley Chapter of the West Virginia University Alumni Association will host Mountaineer Spirit Day, October 12. Several activities are planned, including a free performance by the Mountaineer Marching Band and a kick-off party for the WVU vs. Virginia Tech football game.
