LEWISBURG W.Va. (WVDN) – Greenbrier County announced today it has been selected for participation in Counties for Housing Solutions (C4HS), a cohort program from the National Association of Counties (NACo) and Smart Growth America designed to increase housing supply in counties.
NACo launched C4HS to help counties implement recommendations from NACo’s 2023 Housing Task Force, convened with the goal of addressing America’s housing crisis. By implementing strategies to increase housing supply, counties can bring down rents, support workforce retention, and create pathways to upward economic mobility for American families.
During the Greenbrier County Comprehensive Plan public input process this Spring, residents expressed the need for middle market housing supply as a priority for the community.
As a participant in the NACo Housing for Counties cohort, the county will assess and consider updates to its land use codes to increase affordable housing development and overall housing supply. Participating counties are expected to be on track to formally adopt an amendment to their zoning code at the conclusion of the program.
The team from Greenbrier County participating in this program hopes to learn easy to implement strategies for addressing housing development needs while preserving the characteristics of the community that make the county a desirable place to live and raise a family.
C4HS is part of NACo’s larger Counties for Economic Mobility initiative, which advances practices for equitable upward economic mobility to move individuals and families out of poverty. The initiative is funded through a grant from the Gates Foundation.
