The Seneca Trail Charitable Foundation presented a check to the Greenbrier Valley Aquatic Center (GVAC) on Monday, May 24 at the GVAC development site. In attendance were members of the Seneca Trail Charitable Foundation as well GVAC President TAG Galyean and other GVAC board members.
The construction of the aquatic center has made incredible progress, which is continuing every day. The competition pool has been placed and the remaining two pools are being dug. With the recent completion of the largest section of the roof, crews do not have to be concerned about weather conditions and can instead push ahead with the work.
Board member Jerry Clemons said that many people questioned why they would complete the roof before digging all of the pools. The answer is that by doing so, they are able to not only eliminate weather-related delays but also provide a better area for crews to continue working.
In the coming week, crews will complete the remaining area of the roof as well as dig the remaining two pools. Unfortunately, the upcoming State Fair of West Virginia will delay construction until it concludes. However, they still plan on being able to swim by October. Galyean said they will begin taking memberships in September, though the exact day has not yet been decided. Then, by October, everything will be ready for use. According to Galyean, memberships will be approximately “25% of the Y’s that surround us.”
When speaking about the Greenbrier Valley Aquatic Center, Clemons praised Galyean saying, “he is the architect and the brains behind this whole project and the driving force.” Galyean stated that “We have made great progress.. we have a lot left to do.” He went on to say, “We have the funding to complete what we started, but we need to raise another $500,000 to finish it off in the right manner and we are in the process of doing that.”
Galyean said, “This whole project has been like magic” in reference to the way everything has come together and all of the donations received. The GVAC project has received more than 400 donations with Seneca Trail Charitable Foundation being one of the first and largest supporters. In fact, they pledged $300,000 to the project, which according to Jamie Hamilton, director of Community & Donor Engagement, has been “instrumental in building early momentum in the capital campaign, and helped bring others forward to also support the project.”
There are still some naming opportunities available for contributors. This includes the entry plaza, all of the changing areas, accessible lifts, cold deluge shower, announcers box, starting platforms and more.
