LEWISBURG W.Va. (WVDN) – The Greenbrier Humane Society is currently operating at full capacity, with approximately 63 dogs in their care, despite not even having 60 kennels available. To accommodate this overflow, staff have resorted to housing some animals in wire crates, a heartbreaking and temporary solution that underscores the urgent need for community support.

“This is not how we want any animal to spend their first days in the shelter,” said Kirstin Cole, Community Liaison at Greenbrier Humane Society. “Our team is doing everything we can, but we need help. Now more than ever, we are asking our community to step up and be a lifeline for these animals.”

How You Can Help:

FOUND STRAYS: If you find a stray animal, please consider holding them for the 7-day stray hold period. GHS will assist by posting them to their Facebook page to help locate their owner, easing intake pressure and giving us time to make room.

PET SURRENDERING: If you’re considering surrendering a pet, please explore the GHS Responsible Pet Rehoming Program. They’ll work with you to safely rehome your pet through their online platforms, helping them avoid time in the shelter entirely. Call the team at 304-645-4775 or message us on Facebook to get started with this program.

BECOME A FOSTER: GHS provides all supplies—you provide the safe haven. Fostering offers animals a much-needed break from the shelter and opens space for new intakes.

ADOPT: The most powerful way to help is to adopt. If you’ve been thinking about adding a pet to your family, now is the time.

SPREAD THE WORD: Sharing GHS’s posts on social media could lead someone to their new best friend—even if you’re unable to foster or adopt, your share could provide a safe haven for these animals.

The Greenbrier Humane Society remains committed to caring for every animal that comes through its doors, but this crisis highlights the need for collective action.

“Our ability to continue rescuing and rehoming animals depends on support from the people around us,” Kirstin Cole added. “Whether it’s fostering, adopting, volunteering, or just spreading awareness—every single action matters.”

For more information or to get involved, please contact Greenbrier Humane Society at 304-645-4775 or visit us at 151 Holliday Lane in Lewisburg.
