RATING: (TV-MA)

Netflix’s “Adolescence,” released on March 13, 2025, is a gripping four-part British crime drama that dives into the complicated journey of 13-year-old Jamie Miller, portrayed by newcomer Owen Cooper.

The series opens with Jamie’s arrest for the murder of a female classmate, propelling viewers into a raw exploration of adolescence, societal pressures, and the pervasive influence of online subcultures. Each episode is one constant take, with no breaks or switches. The episodes are rehearsed for days, and the actors then appear on screen with one continuous shot from the camera. Cooper was also cast for the role specifically because he had no acting background, as the director pointed out.

Co-created by actor Stephen Graham and writer Jack Thorne, “Adolescence” distinguishes itself through its innovative storytelling technique: each episode is filmed in a continuous, uninterrupted take. This approach immerses the audience in the unfolding drama, heightening emotional engagement and providing an unfiltered look into Jamie’s troubled world.

The narrative thoughtfully examines the impact of cyberbullying, toxic masculinity and the allure of misogynistic online communities on impressionable teens and young minds. As Jamie’s story unfolds, the series prompts critical conversations about the darker corners of the internet and their real-world consequences.

Cooper’s portrayal of Jamie is both compelling and heartbreaking, capturing the character’s internal turmoil and vulnerability. Stephen Graham delivers a poignant performance as Eddie Miller, Jamie’s father, whose world unravels as he grapples with his son’s actions and the aftermath.

Critical reception has been overwhelmingly positive. The Guardian lauded the series as “the closest thing to TV perfection in decades,” highlighting its powerful storytelling and the exceptional performances of the actors. Similarly, The Establishing Shot awarded it a 9.5/10 rating, praising its skillful execution and emotional depth.

Beyond its artistic merits, “Adolescence” hopes to serve as a catalyst for essential discussions among parents, educators and policymakers regarding the digital landscapes navigated by today’s youth. The series has sparked national conversations about the influence of online content on adolescent behavior, with calls for its inclusion in educational settings to foster dialogue and awareness.

This show, “Adolescence,” is a thought-provoking and emotionally charged series that offers an unflinching look at the challenges facing modern youth. Its innovative storytelling, stellar performances and timely themes make it a standout addition to Netflix’s lineup, prompting viewers to reflect on the complexities of adolescence in the digital age. This show stands as a limited series with four episodes.
