CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WVDN) – West Virginia officials presented the prestigious Medal of Valor to two first responders on Thursday, April 3 for their courageous actions in saving lives during emergencies.

West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey honored first responders with the Medal of Valor, recognizing the actions of Captain Donald Lawson of New Martinsville and Lake volunteer Firefighter Darrell Lambert, who risked their lives to save others, and also recognized the nominees with the Medal of Valor for their actions that went above and beyond the call of duty.

Captain Donald Lawson of the New Martinsville Fire Department and volunteer firefighter Darrell Lambert of Lake Volunteer Fire Department were both recognized for their extraordinary bravery and selflessness.

Lawson was commended for his actions in a hazardous rescue operation last year, where he risked his own life to save a family trapped in a burning building. His quick thinking and selflessness during the emergency helped ensure the safe evacuation of all individuals inside the home.

Lambert received the honor for his daring rescue of a woman who had become trapped in a fast-moving river during a flash flood. Despite the dangerous conditions, Lambert’s swift response saved her life, and his efforts were hailed as nothing short of heroic.

In addition to Lawson and Lambert, several other first responders were nominated for the Medal of Valor for their actions that went above and beyond the call of duty. Governor Patrick Morrisey praised all the nominees, emphasizing the vital role first responders play in keeping communities safe.

“We owe a great deal of gratitude to these brave men and women who put their lives on the line for others every day,” Morrisey said during the ceremony. “Their courage and dedication to service are an inspiration to us all.”

The governor continued to answer questions after the presentation from media for roughly 20 minutes. There were many political questions posed to the governor, which he answered at length. The full video is now available on Youtube for anyone interested.

The Medal of Valor is the state’s highest award for first responders and is presented annually to individuals who display exceptional bravery in the face of danger.
