Miller, Colleagues Introduce Bill to Nullify Biden Plan to Retire American Power Plants

Washington, D.C. (WVDN) – Yesterday, Congresswoman Carol Miller (R-WV) joined Congressman Troy Balderson (R-OH) and 10 of their House colleagues in introducing legislation to nullify Biden-era regulations that would send America’s most critical power plants into early retirement.

The “Clean Power Plan 2.0,” finalized in May 2024, imposes impossible-to-meet emissions requirements on existing coal-fired and newly constructed natural gas-fired power plants. If left in place, this rule will lead to the premature retirement of power plants that generate the reliable power American families and businesses rely upon.

“The EPA’s Clean Power Plan 2.0 was a slap in the face to American energy producers, and a reminder that the Biden administration was determined to take down the U.S. coal industry in the name of ‘green’ energy. If nothing is done to reverse the rule, our power plants and electric grid will suffer immensely. That’s why it is imperative we nullify these regulations to ensure our coal and natural gas power plants, as well as American jobs, are safe. I am grateful that President Trump is working with us to undo the mess created by the Biden administration and is committed to protecting American energy production,” said Congresswoman Miller.

“The ‘Clean Power Plan 2.0’ was the flagship initiative of the Biden-led EPA that, if fully implemented, would destabilize our electric grid and weaken American energy security,” said Congressman Balderson. “Forcing the premature retirement of our most reliable power plants is exceptionally shortsighted when it comes to addressing the long-term reliability of our electric grid. Ohio and the rest of the nation are in the middle of a historic surge in power demand. Nullifying the Biden Administration’s disastrous Clean Power Plan 2.0 will ensure that the lights stay on and the American economy keeps humming.”

Joining Congresswoman Miller and Congressman Balderson in introducing the bill are Representatives Gary Palmer (R-AL), August Pfluger (R-TX), Bob Latta (R-OH), Gus Bilirakis (R-FL), Rick Allen (R-GA), Randy Weber (R-TX), Morgan Griffith (R-VA), Michael Rulli (R-OH), Nick Langworthy (R-NY), and Ryan Zinke (R-MT).

Background:

  • As electricity demand continues to grow at historic levels, grid operators warn that baseload power generation may struggle to keep pace in the coming years.
  • President Trump and his administration have indicated they are actively working to reverse the Biden power plant rule. This legislation supports the Trump administration’s actions and efforts to protect American baseload power production.
  • Last year, Congresswoman Miller released a statement of her disapproval of the EPA’s Clean Power Plan 2.0.
  • Congresswoman Miller and her Congressional Coal-Caucus Co-Chairs released statements on the bicameral resolution to block the Clean Power Plan 2.0 in 2024.
