Sometimes in sports, a team can do nothing wrong, even if they try to do something wrong.
That was the scene at the Spartan Gym in Fairlea on Friday night, April 2 when the Greenbrier East Lady Spartans hit a barrage of 3-pointers, 20 to be exact, en route to an impressive 85-21 victory over the Valley Lumberjills.
East (8-4) could have shot it from the parking lot, backward, around their heads, with their eyes closed and hit nothing but net on that night.
Interestingly enough, Valley took an early 2-0 lead on a basket by Rachel Bates, and that would be the only time the Lumberjills would be close.
Cadence Stewart hit two consecutive threes, then Brooke Davis drilled one from the left-wing and the Spartans led 12-2 just two minutes into the opening quarter.
After Bates scored again for Valley on a floater in the lane, Stewart answered with another trey and the Spartans took a 15-4 lead. Stewart would can two more 3-pointers in the quarter, Allie Dunford had a steal, five points and a beautiful assist to Josie Patterson for two and East held a 28-8 advantage after the first period.
The second quarter will be one to remember for Spartan fans for a while, at least for this season it will not be forgotten. That is because reserve forward Janacia Garrett stole the show. Garrett has played sparingly in several games this year, but she turned into a critical key piece for East overnight apparently.
After a Brookelyn Morgan 3-pointer, Garrett got a tough bucket down low. Then, two possessions later, she calmly sank two free throws, and she still was not finished. She then drained three from the right-wing that rattled around and fell and followed that with an offensive rebound put-back as it was just that kind of night for the Spartans. They led 41-16 at halftime.
The third quarter and whole second half were more of the same.
East hit five more treys in the third with Stewart adding three more to her totals and Dunford had a nice quarter as well as East headed to the fourth up 62-20.
The Spartans concluded their night with another five 3-pointers in the final period.
Kenna Sheppard came off the bench scorching hot like the rest of her teammates and hit two of them. Josie Patterson and Marley Patterson, who are sisters, each hit a trifecta as well.
And in perfect fashion and conclusion to the game, Garrett stepped up and stroked the final 3-pointer of the night as the crowd hit their feet and applauded the girls on one of the better shooting performances in school history.
Nine different players hit at least one three for the Spartans. They were 20-of-40 from beyond the arc.
The defense was also good as they finished with 28 steals.
Stewart led the way with 27 points on nine 3-pointers. Garrett, the Magic’s Computer Repair player of the game, had 12 points and four rebounds in 3:33 minutes of playing time. She was also 4-of-4 from the field. Dunford threw eights across the board with eight points, eight assists and eight steals. Davis was solid again with nine points, six rebounds and seven steals.
