RICHWOOD – One night after putting all twelve players in the scorebook, Greenbrier West almost pulled off the feat in back-to-back nights. Eleven out of twelve Cavaliers put a mark in the scoring column while West cruised to a 75-44 win over longtime rival Richwood Tuesday night.
The Cavaliers got a boost in scoring Tuesday, hitting a season-high twelve three-pointers. Junior guard Kamden Sams was hot early and knocked down a pair of threes. Freshman reserve Carter Vandall added a pair of threes and led Greenbrier West with eight points in the quarter. Colton Dunbar added a basket and did a lot of work cleaning up the boards with four rebounds. In all, Greenbrier West got scoring contributions from three more Cavaliers and outscored the Lumberjacks 23-11 to start the game. Richwood’s Brock Ward had six points on 2-5 shooting from three, and Grady Hall completed a traditional three-point play to lead the Lumberjacks.
The second quarter was Richwood’s undoing. Sams and Vandall each added three pointers while the West big men got in on the scoring action. Asher Barclay contributed a pair of field goals and knocked down the front end of a two-shot foul for five points. Dunbar stayed active on the boards, pulling down three rebounds and adding four points. Aiden Crane added the only other basket for West, but it would’ve been enough to hold the Lumberjacks at bay. Richwood shot a freezing 0-12 from the floor, their only points coming on free throws from Ian Crowder and Christian Neal. Greenbrier West took a commanding 42-13 lead into the halftime break.
The Lumberjacks showed some fight in the third quarter. Ward heated up from behind the arc, going three for three for a nine-point effort. Crowder contributed with a pair of field goals as well as Richwood squeaked by the Cavaliers 17-15 in the frame. Barclay was the scoring leader for Greenbrier West with six points followed by Ben McDaniel with four. Dakota McKinney added a three pointer and West led 57-30 heading into the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter was a three-point flurry for Greenbrier West. The Cavaliers not only registered their season-best twelve treys but got threes from seven different players over the course of the game. Aiden Crane, Shane Plogger, Randy Keener, and Jesse Walkup all took turns on the Cavaliers’ triple carousel. Keener led the scoring charge in the quarter with five points.
Richwood played out the remainder of contest with a game-high sixth three-pointer from Brock Ward. Ward went 6-12 on the night, 4-4 in the second half and led all scorers with 18 points. Christian Neal added a pair of field goals, but West outscored the Lumberjacks 18-14 to close out the game. The win was the second in as many nights for Greenbrier West while Richwood tumbled to its sixth consecutive loss.
Greenbrier West (4-6) hosts Midland Trail Wednesday night for its third of four games in four nights. The Patriots defeated the Cavaliers 57-45 back on December 17. Richwood (1-9) hosts Bath County, VA. on Thursday night.
