WASHINGTON, D.C. (WVDN) – Today, U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), Ranking Member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies (Labor-HHS), announced a Congressionally Directed Spending (CDS) award from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for Kanawha Hospice Care in Charleston, W.Va.

This award, which was secured through a CDS request made solely by Ranking Member Capito in Fiscal Year 2024 (FY24), will be used to renovate the building, which will ultimately help effectively serve patients receiving end-of-life care.

“I personally understand the challenges associated with caregiving, which is why I have worked diligently to create and support solutions that help caregivers,” Ranking Member Capito said. “This particular CDS award will help Kanawha Hospice Care improve and maintain its facility that serves 16 counties throughout West Virginia, as well as lift uncertainty off of families who have a loved one receiving end-of-life care.”

“We are incredibly grateful to Senator Capito for her many years of support and commitment to the families we serve throughout West Virginia,” Christopher Rawlings, HospiceCare Chief Executive Officer, said. “This vital funding will ensure that the Hubbard Hospice House can continue to provide a safe, comforting environment for our patients and their loved ones during the most challenging moments of their lives. Thanks to Senator Capito’s efforts, we can focus on delivering compassionate care while improving our facilities for long-term sustainability.”

Individual award details listed below:

  • $426,000 HHS Capito-only CDS award to Kanawha Hospice Care (Charleston, W.Va.) to replace the roof at the Hubbard Hospice House, which serves 16 counties in rural and southern West Virginia. Constructed 20 years ago, the hospice house was the first inpatient facility in West Virginia. The building is in need of a new roof to continue serving end-of-life patients and their families. This upgrade will install a replacement roof that is more energy efficient and reduces operating costs, thus enhancing Kanawha Hospice Care’s sustainability.
