CHARMCO – Greenbrier West earned a hard-fought, 58-54 overtime win over Summit Christian Academy on Monday night at John C. Estep Gymnasium. The Lady Cavaliers battled through numerous ties and lead changes to secure their first win of the season. Preslee Treadway led all scorers with a 27-point performance. Treadway notched a double-double by also pulling down 12 rebounds in the win. Summit Christian’s Ella Botts, a sophomore, led the Falcons in defeat with 25 points.

The Lady Cavaliers got off to a fast start, mostly due to Maddie Fields who scored 11 of her 19 points in the opening stanza. West led 14-9 at the end of the first quarter. Summit Christian’s top-scoring duo of Botts and senior Bailee Martin provided eight points in the quarter.

Summit Christian, formerly Mercer Christian, battled back in the second quarter behind the efforts of Botts and Martin, outscoring the Cavaliers 17-11 to squeak ahead 26-25 at the halftime break. Botts poured in nine and ended the half with 13 points. Maddie Fields, however, led all scorers with 15 first-half points.

Greenbrier West opened up a bit of a cushion in the third quarter as Treadway began to heat up from the floor. Treadway matched her first half output with seven points. Junior guard Brilee Redden drilled a three pointer and knocked down two free throws for a five-point quarter. Once again, Botts and Martin kept Summit close with four and five points, respectively. The Lady Cavaliers led 44-39 after three quarters of play.

The Falcons, 3-1 entering the contest, displayed some grit and battled back to tie the game at the end of regulation. Botts dropped seven more points but missed a crucial free throw that would’ve put Summit Christian in the lead. Greenbrier West had a chance to win the game in regulation. With 10.1 seconds, remaining, West pushed the ball up the floor. Maddie Fields was fouled on a drive from the right wing, but the officials determined the foul was on the floor. With .3 on the clock, the Cavaliers attempted an inbounds play to Treadway that was unsuccessful.

Treadway owned the overtime period, completing a three-point play and going 4-4 from the foul line. The Lady Cavaliers outscored Summit Christian 7-3 to complete the 58-54 win. In addition to Treadway’s 27 points, Fields added 19, Redden 9, and Haylee Ward 3. For the Falcons, Botts led the way with 25 points followed by Martin with 15, and Abby Greer with 8. Abby Tufts, Jordin Hawks, and Abagail Shrewbury each contributed 2 points apiece in the loss.

Greenbrier West, 1-2, hosts Wirt County Saturday evening at 2:30. Summit Christian Academy, 3-2, hosts Shady Spring on Thursday afternoon.
