FAIRLEA- The newly ranked no. 2 Greenbrier East Lady Spartans were back home in the Spartan Gym on Tuesday night, Dec. 17 to host the Pikeview Lady Panthers after picking up two good road wins this past weekend.
And if you have ever heard the term, quick work, well, that described the action on the floor once the ball was put in the air.
The Spartans (5-0) got an offensive rebound putback from Hannah Fuller, who was back in the lineup after missing the last couple games with an injury, to open the game, then Kennedy Stewart and Jada Waller followed with a 3-pointer each, and Ava Workman got an old fashioned three-point play. At that point, it was 11-0 and some people were still looking for their seats.
The lead grew to 18-0 before the Panthers would get a free throw to go through from Haley Justice.
Pikeview did not score a shot from the field during the entire first quarter as the Spartans shot over 60 percent in the process. After one quarter, East led 27-3.
Credit should go to Pikeview (2-3) for not giving up. A proud program, the Panthers actually outscored the Spartans 12-8 in the second quarter behind good play from Justice and Karis Trump. They showed signs of life and looked to be headed to the locker room with a small dose of momentum, but Workman went down the lane for a wide-open layup at the halftime buzzer to keep East’s lead rather large at 35-15.
Two quick 3s from Stewart in the third quarter extended the Spartans lead to 45-17 with around six minutes left in the third, and after that point, the Spartans never let up until they emptied their bench later in the contest.
Stewart scored 23 points with seven threes and also grabbed four rebounds. Waller had a nice game with 11 points, five rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Workman put in 10 points and got seven rebounds, Mackenna McClure scored eight points and had six boards, and Sandy Banton got eight rebounds as well.
Justice led the Panthers with 13 points. Trump added 12.
The Lady Spartans will take on their biggest rival, Woodrow Wilson (3-0) this Thursday, Dec. 19 in Raleigh County and will travel to meet this same Pikeview team the following Friday.
