Winter.

That’s not something everyone looks forward to. The bitter cold, snowstorms, ice, and crappy roads. But when winter comes, that means wrestling season for the Greenbrier West Cavaliers.

This past Friday was a first of hopefully many–according to the wrestling head coach Jeremy Tincher of GWHS and founder of West End Youth Wrestling–youth scrimmages held at the home of West End Wrestling in the old Rupert School Gym. We got to witness the future of Greenbrier West wrestling show off their talent as current athletes of Greenbrier West wrestling assisted running the tournament with veteran West wrestlers. Names such as Trent Walker (owner of Walker Physical Therapy), Colton Dorsey (current head coach for Western Greenbrier Middle School), and Colton Kessler (assistant coach WGMS) and many more. The youth wrestlers shared their accomplishments with a scrimmage between themselves to showcase their talents. How many times have you ever been to a wrestling meet and your kid wrestle twice in less than an hour? Not often, but the talent was definitely there and quite the matches were shown.

In the corners coaching the kids were youth coach Jason Kesterson, Colton Dorsey, Trent Walker and Colton Kessler. Kesterson is a Nicholas County Graduate. C.Dorsey, T. Walker and C.Kessler are all Greenbrier West alumni, and they have all wrestled for Jeremey Tincher.

Tincher has grown an empire in the wrestling community around the western end of Greenbrier County. We have multiple families where the parents have wrestled and have passed the love of the sport to their children. Wrestling for many Greenbrier County kids has become LIFE. Four state championship A titles, multiple place winners, and several state champions. Tincher is not done though as he’s looking for another title.

The chase starts this coming Saturday, December 14 when the Cavaliers take the mat at Greenbrier East for the first meet of the season.

If you’re interested in watching a talented group of kids, please join West End Youth Friday evening at 6:30 at the old Rupert School Gym as Coalfield Elite join them for another scrimmage. Donations at the door are appreciated. Western Greenbrier Middle School wrestles Wednesday 12/11 at Midland Trail.
