GREENBRIER COUNTY W.Va. (WVDN) – Ronceverte Elementary student, Jase Lyons, a second grader in Ms. White’s class, grew a sunflower with a 59″ circumference. Lewisburg Elementary student, Emmalyn Web, a fifth grader in Ms. Gray’s class, grew a 54″ sunflower. Outstanding sunflowers, indeed!
Lyons and Web both received a grand prize of $25 cash and a “Birds of West Virginia” book. All students who presented a sunflower to be measured received $1 and a conservation certificate.
It was great fun for club members Gretchen Lovett, Ghee Gossard, Don and Marit Withrow and Townley and Trip Hamilton to visit the impressive elementary schools and measure each beautiful sunflower.
Lewisburg House and Garden Club have been distributing seeds, teaching nature’s cycle, the value of feeding the birds and organizing this friendly contest since 1959. Club members will return to the schools in May to distribute sunflower seeds for the 2025 growing season.
