MONROE COUNTY W.Va. (WVDN) – The Monroe County Republican Party hosted an afternoon of grilled hamburgers and patriotism on Saturday, Sept. 28.
Some 100 attended the Patriot Picnic at the Grandview Cottages overlooking an open-air panorama of the Monroe County mountain countryside from Greenville, West Virginia.
“We were glad to see a good mix of people, including families, join us during this election season,” said Duane Miller, chairman of the Monroe County Republican Executive Committee and Club.
“We want to get people enthused and involved in matters that affect our government,” he said.
Attendees helped themselves to hamburgers grilled on-site by Monroe County Magistrate Kevin Miller as state officials and local candidates provided comments.
Kris Warner, candidate for the office of West Virginia secretary of state, urged for patriotism to be taught in schools. “It’s not automatic,” he said. “It needs to be taught.”
Denny Canterbury Jr., also known as “Ray,” announced his candidacy for election to the West Virginia House of Delegates to represent District 47.
Roy Cooper, incumbent delegate for District 40, briefly discussed the financial being of the state in connection with the natural gas industry.
West Virginia Senator Jack David Woodrum, representing District 10, spoke of the need for citizens to vote.
Numerous prize drawings, live entertainment and a disk jockey rounded off the afternoon.
