Stephen Doss Whanger, 59, of White Sulphur Springs, WV, passed away on Thursday, January 9, 2020, at home.
He was born on July 10, 1960, at the Abbott Clinic in White Sulphur Springs, and was the son of Clarice J. Wylie Whanger and the late William Lee Whanger.
Stephen attended DeVry University in Columbus, OH, from 1978-1981, obtaining a degree in electronics technology. He moved to northern Virginia in 1982, and worked for Amtrak in Washington, D.C., as an electrical locomotive technician for 35 years. His coworkers admired and trusted his skills at repairing complicated equipment and he was very dedicated to his craft.
He recently moved back to White Sulphur Springs due to failing health.
Stephen enjoyed hunting and fishing, tinkering with electronics and old clocks, and was an avid reader. He was particularly interested in reading U.S. history and world events. Stephen loved a challenge and could repair just about anything. If he was unfamiliar with a machine or device, he would research and study manuals until he figured it out. He was a beloved son and brother, and was a kind and gentle man. He will be greatly missed.
He is predeceased by his father, William Lee Whanger. Stephen was also preceded in death by his stepfather, Harry C. Barker, previously of Bridgeport, WV; paternal grandparents, William Henry Whanger and Annie B. Carter Whanger; maternal grandparents, Madison Boyd Wylie and Samary Elizabeth Myers Wylie; one aunt and three uncles, Marguerite Jane Wylie Booska, Madison Boyd Wylie Jr., Ned Wilburn Wylie, and Sonne Charles Wylie.
Stephen is survived by his mother, Clarice Wylie Whanger Barker; and one sister, Cherie Whanger Davenport of Bridgeport. He is also survived by four brothers, William L. Whanger II (Gabriele) of Wurzburg, Germany, Larry B. Whanger (Susan) of Richmond, VA, Kerry L. Whanger (Tina) of Lewisburg, WV, and Brian Shane Whanger of White Sulphur Springs; five nieces, Kristin, Whitney, Jamie, Kara, and Jennifer; three nephews, Jason, Adam, and Joshua; and many great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.
