LOGAN, WV (WVDN) — Gov. Jim Justice announced the opening of the Chief Logan State Park Connector Trail, linking the lodge to the popular Hatfield-McCoy Trails system.

This new 4.6-mile trail connects to the Bearwallow Trail, allowing riders to stay at the Chief Logan Lodge without trailering their units to the trails. It also provides a unique and scenic experience for outdoor enthusiasts. Under Gov. Justice’s leadership, over $250 million have been invested in West Virginia State Parks.

“West Virginia’s state parks are the crown jewels of our state, and we’ve made it our mission to ensure they continue to shine for generations to come,” Gov. Justice said. “The new Chief Logan State Park Connector Trail is a perfect example of how we’re enhancing our parks to provide even more opportunities for people to experience the natural beauty of West Virginia. This trail is not just a connector—it’s a gateway to adventure, offering our visitors a unique perspective on the amazing landscapes that make our state so special.”

The $100,000 project, completed in August 2024, is the result of a successful collaboration between the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (WVDNR), Hatfield-McCoy Trails, the West Virginia Department of Tourism, and the West Virginia Division of Highways (WVDOH).

The Governor announced the funds for this trail in April of this year.

“Our State Parks are for everyone’s enjoyment, and the addition of the Chief Logan State Park Connector Trail is another step toward making our parks more accessible and enjoyable for all visitors,” Acting West Virginia State Parks Chief Dillard Price said. “This trail not only connects our parks but also connects people with the incredible beauty of West Virginia. We’re excited to share this new experience with visitors from near and far.”

The trail was constructed using reclaimed surface mine benches within the park, offering riders a firsthand view of how nature reclaims mining areas over time. Additionally, the ridge-top portion of the trail offers breathtaking views of Chief Logan State Park, allowing visitors to see the park in a way few have before, especially as the fall colors begin to emerge.

“The partnership between WVDNR, Hatfield-McCoy Trails and WVDOH has resulted in a trail that is both functional and beautiful,” Jeff Lusk, Executive Director of Hatfield-McCoy Trails,  said. “This new connection will allow more people to discover the wonders of Chief Logan State Park while enjoying the adventure of the Bearwallow Trail system.”

The Chief Logan State Park Connector Trail is now open to the public, providing lodge guests with direct access to the Bearwallow Trail system without the need to trailer their vehicles to a trailhead. This convenience, coupled with the trail’s stunning views, is expected to make it a popular destination for visitors in the coming months.
