FAIRLEA- On Wednesday morning, Greenbrier East soccer head coach Lucas Lemine called the Washington Patriots, “the best team in the eastern panhandle.”
On Wednesday afternoon, that statement rang relatively true.
The Spartans suffered a 4-0 setback to Washington in a game that opened the 2024 regular season on Aug.23 at Spartan Field.
The Patriots, who lost to Princeton the day prior, in what their fans in the stands were calling an upset, led 1-0 at halftime as the Spartans played pretty well in the first half.
But in the second half, Washington got a couple goals early that set the tone for the rest of the contest. Landan Stull scored just three-and-a-half minutes in and made it 2-0. Then, just about four minutes later, the Patriots’ Cyrus Butera kicked a nice pass to Logan Poplar who found the net at the 32:59 mark.
Stull scored again at 23:05 to seal the deal.
The Spartans were unable to get many shot attempts as Washington’s defense was aggressive and stout all day.
East will look to pick up their first win of the new season on Saturday, August 24 when they travel to Buckhannon-Upshur.
