HURRICANE W.Va. (WVDN) – A mother is charged with Death of a Child by Parent or Guardian following the death of a 16-day-old baby from the Charles Court area of Hurricane. The West Virginia State Police released the following statement:

“On Thursday, June 20, 2024 approximately 9:40 pm, Trooper T.A. Fisher was dispatched by West Virginia State Police Troop 4 Communications to C.A.M.C. Women’s & Children’s Hospital regarding an unresponsive 16-day-old baby. The baby had been transported from Charles Court, in Hurricane/Putnam County, West Virginia.

“Initial information obtained by Trooper T.A. Fisher indicated that the infant had sustained multiple, serious injuries. Trooper T.A. Fisher was advised by C.A.M.C. medical staff that the injuries appeared to be suspicious/non-accidental in nature.

“Trooper T.A. Fisher then conducted follow-up investigation and interviewed the mother, 33 year old, Brooke Kessler of Hurricane, WV. Trooper T.A. Fisher determined the infant received the injuries while in the custody and control of the mother, Brooke Kessler.

“On Friday, June 21, 2024, at approximately 3:50 am, Brooke Kessler was arrested by Trooper T.A. Fisher for Child Abuse Causing Serious Bodily Injury, Strangulation, and Malicious Assault.

“On Sunday, June 23, 2024, at approximately 3:41 pm, the infant was taken off of life support at C.A.M.C Women’s and Children’s Hospital and pronounced deceased by medical staff.

“On June 24, 2024, Trooper T.A. Fisher refiled criminal charges with the Putnam County Prosecuting Attorney. At this time Brooke Kessler, was charged with Death of a Child by Parent or Guardian.”

This investigation remains active and ongoing.
