On Wednesday, June 12, the Class A all-state baseball selections were announced and the Greenbrier West Cavaliers and the James Monroe Mavericks both had players throughout the squads.
West star Braydon McClung secured a first-team selection as a utility player. McClung, also an all-state basketball player, hit .576 this season with three doubles, two triples, and 14 RBIs. He also scored 27 runs and stole 28 bases as both led the team. McClung has played in a couple all-star games since the season ended.
The James Monroe duo of Cooper Ridgeway and Peyton Gardinier were picked as second-team selections. Ridgeway was named the captain of that team as a catcher and this past year hit .405 with nine doubles, two triples, and 24 RBIs. He added 34 runs scored and swiped 18 bases. As a backstop on defense, Ridgeway had a .977 fielding percentage. Gardinier was honored as an outfielder after hitting .412 with 10 doubles, two triples, two HRs, and a team-best 38 RBIs.
James Monroe’s Hudson Boggess (.376, 17 RBIs, 35 runs) and Kadyn Hines (.370, six doubles, 21 RBIs– 47 Ks in 22 IP) were named honorable mention and the Cavaliers’ David Lester (.420, 6 doubles, triple, 21 RBIs) also got a spot on that team.
