Delmas Clark Waid
Delmas Clark Waid of Alvon went to be with the Lord on May 30th, 2024, after a life of service and care for his family, church, community, state, and nation. He passed away at age 76, following a short illness.
Born June 18, 1947, to Willard (d. 1989) and Helen Waid (d. 2008) of Alvon, Delmas was the oldest son among five children. He was preceded into eternity by sister, Joetta Lilly, and brother, Willard Lake Waid.
Delmas met the love of his life, Joan Marie Skinner, at age 16, whom he wed on August 23, 1969. Delmas and Joan raised two children, together, in a home built with his own hands on Waid’s Draft Road in Alvon.
Delmas served in the United States Army in the 19th Engineer Battalion, specializing in demolition and explosives removal. He had a distinguished tour of duty in Vietnam, in 1967-1968, where he earned the Bronze Star for Valor, among other awards, and attained the rank of E-5.
He built his career with the West Virginia Department of Transportation, where he supervised the construction and maintenance of over a thousand bridges in southeast West Virginia. During that time, he also led many projects throughout the region to rebuild bridges following flooding emergencies.
Delmas was a man of deep faith in Jesus and served as deacon and treasurer at Greenbrier Valley Baptist Church in White Sulphur Springs.
Delmas cared for numerous beloved pets over the decades, including his yellow Labrador, Brady, who also passed away recently.
He will be remembered for his unique creativity, quick wit, problem solving, and ingenuity. He was a man who could build and fix anything, and an outdoorsman highly skilled with arms, bow, and rod. He was also a man with a broad knowledge of history, politics, mechanics and design, wildlife, and many other areas. He was a deep thinker and insightful, and his compassion and generosity impacted countless people.
Delmas’ life continues to be celebrated and remembered by his wife, Joan; and their two sons and spouses, John Waid (Dawn) and Aaron Waid (Alexis); as well as grandson, Johnathan Waid (Abby); and grandson, Rhett Waid; and granddaughter, Lucy Waid. He is also remembered by sisters, Delores Ryder (Charlie) and Bethel Anderson (Lewis); as well as many other family members, friends, church members, and others impacted by his life and service.
The Waid Family would like to thank the staff of Lewis-Gale Medical Center in Salem and The Brian Center in Low Moor for their care during his final weeks. They also thank decades-long friend and neighbor, Shirley Boggs, for her support over the years and during the past few weeks.
A service was held in memory of Delmas Clark Waid at Greenbrier Valley Baptist Church on Monday, June 3rd, at 2 p.m.
