Herbert “Herb” Eugene McComsey, 90, of Washington Boro, PA, formerly of Cornstalk, WV, passed peacefully on Thursday, April 5, 2018, with his family by his side.
Born in Lancaster, PA, on December 10, 1927, he was the last remaining child of William H. and A. Elizabeth Eckman McComsey.
He and his wife, Shela F. Stiltner McComsey, had just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on November 25, 2017.
Herb was full of life and wit until Alzheimer’s took over his wonderful personality. He made his living as a commercial artist, but wore many hats; truck driver, woodcarver, painter, crop appraiser, and chef. He loved sharing his musical talent (playing the bagpipes) and was a 25-plus year member of the Kiltie Band of York, PA, the Virginia Highlands Pipes and Drums in Salem, VA, and the St. Andrew’s Society of Baltimore, MD. He was a proud World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy, where he served aboard the USS Saratoga from 1944-1946.
He was preceded in death by his four siblings, William H. McComsey Jr., Imogene Evaston, Carolyn Fuhrer, and Jan McComsey.
He will be lovingly missed by his wife, Shela; three children, Dawn A. Cramer, married to Ronald E. Cramer, of Holtwood, PA, Shawn Angus McComsey of Lancaster, and Dirk I. McComsey, married to Michaun Reed, of Blacksburg, VA; five grandchildren; John Heiselman, of Pequea, PA, Megan McComsey, of Lancaster, Scott McComsey, of Johnstown, PA, and Connor and Aidan McComsey, of Blacksurg; and five great-grandchildren. He especially will be missed by his five “out-of-step” sons, Charlie White Jr., Ervil T. (Tom) Burns, Dan Possumato, Paul Cullen, and Will Garner.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 13, 2018, at Manor Church, 530 Central Manor Rd., Lancaster, PA 17603. Traditional casket burial will be in the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, PA, with military honors on Monday afternoon, April 16, at 2:30 p.m.
A viewing will be held from 6 – 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 12, at the Andrew T. Scheid Funeral Home, 320 Blue Rock Rd., Route 999, Millersville, PA 17551, and again on Friday at the church, one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, a donation in Herb’s honor to the Grundy High School, 1300 Golden Wave Drive, Grundy, VA 24614, reference Fred and Sallie Stiltner Memorial Scholarship, would be deeply appreciated.
