Alma Virginia Fullen Hogsett, 102 years of age, of Lewisburg, WV, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, September 5, 2017, at Greenbrier Manor in Fairlea, WV, after a long and beautiful life on this earth.
Alma was born May 30, 1915, in Union, WV, the daughter of Wheeler Ross Fullen and Mary Lou Ashworth.
She was best known as the “Singing Greenbrier County Music Teacher” and touched many hearts in the county.
She attended Concord College, WV Wesleyan, Appalachian University in Boone, NC, and West Virginia University. After completing her education, she took her first job in Ronceverte, WV, where she taught elementary music. During this time, she married William Russell Hogsett, a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy.
In 1955, she became the traveling music teacher for the next 19 years from Ronceverte to Richwood and Oak Hill, helping children all over the county. She became music coordinator for Greenbrier County and attendance director. She received multiple awards and memberships in WVEA, NEA, and MENC. Alma was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Ronceverte and loved the Lord. She was also a world traveler.
She is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen Russell Hogsett and Cally Price Hogsett and Joseph Ross Hogsett and Denise Liuzzo Hogsett; one grandson-in-law, William Steven Burns and wife, Lisa McQuaid Burns; five great-grandchildren, Morghan, Oliver, Drew, Edie, and Reed Burns; nieces, Elizabeth Wooldridge, Nancy Beaver, and Sandra Martin; and multiple friends and acquaintances.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved granddaughter, Ann Kristen Hogsett Burns; and sisters, Dorothy Martin and Kathleen Wooldridge.
Alma had a deep love for music. Life was totally devoted to her family who will miss her so very much. She had a wonderful outlook on life and often said, “It is great to be alive. The world is a beautiful place, and I thank the Lord every day that I can put my two feet on the floor.”
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, September 8, 2017, at the McCraw Funeral Home in Lewisburg, with the Rev. Dave Stilgenbauer officiating. Burial will follow at Greenhill Cemetery in Union.
The family will receive friends on Friday from 10 AM until time of the service.
