CHARMCO (WVDN) – Montcalm’s Generals were no match for the Greenbrier West ladies’ basketball team Tuesday night. The Cavaliers sprinted out of the gate and raced to a 21-0 first quarter bulge on their way to a resounding 73-32 win. It was West’s fifth consecutive win and improved the sixth-ranked Cavaliers to 12-2 on the season.

Meagan Poticher controlled the opening tip and then collected an assist on a Preslee Treadway layup for the first basket of the game. Treadway then asserted herself on the defensive end with rebounds on the Generals’ first two possessions followed by a steal. Maddy Fields was the beneficiary of the Treadway takeaway, as she sliced in for a transition layup and an early 6-0 lead. Ava Barclay stepped in front of a Katlyn Williams pass and swung a cross-court lob to Fields, who promptly nailed a 3-pointer. After a flurry of swapped possessions, Fields returned the favor and assisted Barclay on a 3 from the right side.

With less than two minutes remaining in the opening quarter, the onslaught continued. Poticher pulled down a defensive rebound and outletted to Barclay. Barclay fed the ball to Treadway in the high post, and Treadway made a nifty double move and beat the defender to the basket for the lay-in. A Fields steal underneath the Montcalm basket got the Cavaliers out on the run. Thomas dealt the ball to Barclay on the left side of the basket, and Barclay served it directly back to Thomas for a 16-0 lead. Barclay then went coast-to-coast after a missed Brittany Kendrick 3. Fields closed the quarter with a traditional 3-point play.

The Generals got on the scoreboard at the 7:43 mark of the second quarter, when Williams knocked down the front end of a one-and-one. After a 5-0 Generals run, Brilee Redden registered her first points of the evening, when she converted all three free throws following a box-out foul by Williams. Brooklyn Adkins knocked down West’s first field goal of the second quarter with a baseline jumper with 3:49 remaining in the half. Sam Holliday would add the Cavaliers’ last basket of the half on a short-range lay-in with 1:24 remaining then knocked down a free throw just before the halftime buzzer sounded. Montcalm outpaced Greenbrier West 13-7 in the second quarter, but the Lady Cavaliers held a commanding 28-13 halftime lead.

Any momentum the Generals grabbed in the second quarter was promptly squashed. Greenbrier West exploded for 32 third-quarter points while holding Montcalm to a single basket. Barclay continued to display her improved shooting range with a 3-pointer followed by another double-move gem from Treadway. Treadway then ignited a fast break with a steal and a dish to Barclay. Treadway continued to torment the Generals with a stick back on a missed 3-pointer followed by a steal and a pull-up, 7-foot jumper that ran the score to 41-15. Treadway’s scoring rampage was briefly interrupted by a General free throw, but she answered with a 15-foot jumper from the left wing.

Fields stuffed a Williams’ jumper and took the ball in for an uncontested layup at the other end, but Treadway got right back in the action. Poticher fed Treadway a baseline bounce pass from one side of the lane to the other, and Treadway elevated between three General defenders for a layup. Treadway then ripped a rebound away from Taylor Dunford and sent a three-quarter court chest pass to Fields who had settled beneath the basket. Fields’ bucket ran the West lead to 49-16.

The Cavalier starting five continued to apply steady pressure to Montcalm’s defense. Barclay assisted on a Thomas layup, then Fields plucked an offensive rebound from the air and laid it back in. Barclay added to her assist total with a Poticher baseline jumper, and Treadway took another steal coast-to-coast for a turnaround, layup jumper. Barclay put an exclamation point on the quarter, when she banked in a 3 at the buzzer. At 60-18, the competitive portion of the contest was long over.

Redden would tally 7 points in the final frame. Hannah Sweet registered a rebound and a bucket, and Sam Holliday connected on a baseline jumper. Haylee Ward notched a basket, and Kenna Fields nailed the final basket of the evening for the Cavaliers.

Treadway led Greenbrier West with 16 points, six rebounds, four assists and five steals. Maddy Fields added 14 points. Barclay had 13 points and 5 assists including 3-3 from the 3-point line. Kendrick and Madison Hudgins paced the Generals with 10 points each.

Greenbrier West (12-2) heads to Lindside on Jan. 25 to face James Monroe. Montcalm hosts Bluefield Thursday night.
